The Executive Head will oversee all legal, compliance, regulatory and intellectual property matters for M-Pesa Africa, ensuring the business aligns with both local and international standards. The job goes beyond managing legal risks; it involves influencing policy direction, guiding strategy, and strengthening M-Pesa’s positioning in the increasingly complex mobile financial services environment.

Major Areas of Responsibility

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Lead the drafting, negotiation, and management of major M-Pesa contracts

  • Provide expert legal guidance on compliance, employment law, IP matters, corporate governance, and new legislative developments

  • Support regulatory planning during product development and market expansion

  • Manage disputes and litigation arising from business operations

  • Support operational companies (OpCos) by providing regulatory perspectives in product and business planning

  • Represent M-Pesa Africa in policy forums, regional institutions, and global events

  • Monitor and interpret regulatory shifts in African fintech markets

  • Collaborate with internal audit and risk teams on compliance audits

What Qualifications Do You Need?

Safaricom is looking for applicants with:

  • A Law degree from a reputable institution

  • A Kenya School of Law Diploma

  • 10+ years of regulatory experience in financial services

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

  • Experience navigating regulatory frameworks across African markets

  • Additional certifications in areas such as AML, arbitration, legislative drafting, IP law, or negotiation
