Roster Opportunity: National Consultants for Loss and Damage at UNICEF

UNICEF is expanding its pool of experts through the creation of a Roster of National Consultants for Loss and Damage under the Global Programme Division. This consultancy role offers professionals based in Nairobi an opportunity to contribute to climate-related programming that places children and vulnerable populations at the center of national response efforts.

The role focuses on supporting governments to strengthen national loss and damage reporting systems by integrating child-sensitive and age-disaggregated data. Consultants will promote the use of the Global Children Hazard Database, helping ensure that evidence on children’s exposure to climate and disaster risks informs national policies and investment decisions.

In addition to technical support, consultants will engage in training and knowledge-sharing activities, providing regular updates to UNICEF headquarters, centres of excellence, and country offices. Their work will help bridge global policy discussions with local realities, ensuring UNICEF’s loss and damage efforts remain context-driven and impactful.

Given the localized nature of loss and damage interventions, this role prioritizes country ownership. National consultants are expected to use their familiarity with local systems, languages, and policy environments to facilitate inclusive, bottom-up development of FRLD proposals.

This position is well-suited for professionals who combine technical expertise with strong local insight and a commitment to climate justice for children.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree in development studies, environmental policy, climate science, or related fields

  • Experience working with national data systems, climate policy, or disaster risk management

  • Knowledge of monitoring, reporting, and evaluation frameworks

  • Strong facilitation and training skills

  • Commitment to child-sensitive and inclusive development approaches
